Chapter VII: Two
Legends Travel ~Oedipus
Meanwhile, in an uncharted dimension, there exists a planet known only as the Otherworld. This is the home of Sketch Tucker and his friends. They struggle to defeat the evil that exists in the world of Utopia in order to prevent the world's destruction.
But that's another story.
Far away, on a more distant part of the Otherworld, there is a giant castle. Its high towers seem to sprout from what looks like a green stone pyramid. Inside the giant stronghold live two secluded legends.
One is Oedipus Mikhail, a Mage of the warlock variety. Throughout the many years of his existence on Utopia he has been learning how to use many special powers from the great book of his ancestors, as well as learning how to use powers that have never been found in the book as he continues to add to the great spell book. Despite his great age, he appears to be very young.
The other is Nubi Ankhara, an Anubis of life. Unlike her older brother Akhanatem, who takes the lives of the sickly and weak in the world, Nubi fights to keep many of the sick well and the weak strong. She oversees the spirits of Utopia and revives those she feels worthy to be granted a second chance. Like her love Oedipus, she is not as young as she appears to be.
As Oedipus watches Sketch and the others take off on a new adventure in their home world of Utopia, he sighs. "Nubi," he says, "I hate to say this, but I am afraid that things have grown rather dull here for the last few years."
"I agree," replied Nubi, who was lounging in a great chair. "The Otherworld is indeed a nice place, but there is nothing in this little world of any true interest. We have seen all that there is to see." She got up and approached Oedipus. "Young Tucker and his friends seem to enjoy searching for adventure in Utopia. It must be exciting to go on such intriguing journeys."
"Yes..." Oedipus looked out the window once more, scratching his chin. Suddenly a thought had come on. "Perhaps we could go on an adventure of our own!"
"But Oed," Nubi said in uncertainty, "where is there to go? If we found ourselves among young Tucker's group, we might ruin things for them!"
"I'm not at all certain," Oedipus replied. "Personally, after all the years of my life, I have seen all there is to see in Utopia. Maybe there are other things to see in another world."
"Another world?"
"Yes, Nubi." Oedipus put on his cloak and giant pointed hat. "Let us go on an adventure in a world much different from ours. Perhaps there is something elsewhere that will catch our interest."
"Do you think it's wise?" asked Nubi. "What if we do not return?"
"Calm yourself, my love. I'm certain we will be able to go home somehow..."
Oedipus and Nubi arrived in the small house of Jamal and Jamal-2. Neither of the Jamals are in the house, so they enter quietly. A strange, poorly-built machine is stationed in an empty room. There are small displays on the black dented metal with labels written above LED displays in White-out: "Time," "Dist," "Status," and "Dim#."
"There it is, Nubi...the Dimension transport machine."
"I don't know, Oed...I mean, we're liable to arrive in a dimension unsuitable for life! Couldn't you use your magic to make your own dimensional portal?"
"I cannot do that, Nubi. I am sure that there are spells that do that in my spell book, but I have not learned to do them."
"I just don't know if this is a good idea."
"What makes you say that?"
"They call it 'women's intuition.'"
Oedipus scratched his head. "I'll have to look into that. But we musn't worry. We came to go on an exciting adventure, so I feel there is no surprise that we will confront some form of conflict or danger."
Nubi sighed. "You may be right. So where do we go?"
"I'm not sure. This machine might be able to choose a new world to explore."
"If you say so..."
With that, Oedipus turned on the machine. A loud hum began to sound, and the LED displays flickered. The time was the first to display. Next came the distance, which displayed "041300." Then came a blocky Status report that said "StAbLE." The last display showed strange unorganized bits of LED. Suddenly a portal appeared, showing a new world in its opening.
"Well, our door to the new world is here! Let's go!"
Nubi looked at the Dimension number in concern. "Oed, perhaps we should be concerned about this--"
"Do not worry, Nubi," said Oedipus. "Everything will be fine. Now come on, Nubi...a new world awaits!"
Nubi smiled. "All right! Let's go!"
With that, they
jumped into the portal, which as they entered had suddenly disappeared. The
machine then shut itself off because of low power.
Oedipus and Nubi looked around in their new surroundings, and a sickening feeling began to grow in their stomachs.
"I don't feel at all well, Oedipus," said Nubi. "I have a really bad feeling about all this."
"To be honest, Nubi," he replied, "I feel the same way. Something is definitely wrong."
"I think we ended up in a bad world," Nubi said nervously, inching closer to Oedipus. "Let's go back, please?"
Oedipus looked to were the portal once was, noticing that it was no longer there. "It looks like we have no choice but to stay."
"OH, NO! OED!"
Nubi jumped into Oedipus's arms and squeezed tightly, crying. Oedipus patted Nubi's head, wondering what to do.
"Okay, relax," he said. "I know that it's painful knowing that we have no remote way of getting home. But perhaps there is someone here that has the ability to bring us back home. Besides, we came to have a great adventure. Let's go exploring..."
Nubi sniffled. "Okay..."
With that, Nubi and Oedipus began roaming through the new world, not
noticing the old sign nearby that read "Zolott..."
