Chapter XXVIII: Storm on a Sunny Day ~Kaye

Kaye ended up taking the lead as the group (Actually it could be more appropriately called a trio, or maybe even a crowd...nevermind, I'll stick with group...) reached the edge of the Big, and started out towards the horizon. Just as soon as they lost sight of the other group, one person, and one person a voice came through the radio.
"We have exited the Big and are now on our way towards an interesting tree, over." Three guesses as to who it was...
Oedipus looked at the radio, then pressed the button on the side. "Um, that's nice." He replied.
"The tree appears to have leaves on it, over."
"Um, Kyanosa..."
"Who did kill Mr. Boddy, over?"
"Where's the off switch?" Nubi reached for the radio.
"On the other side of the radio, over."
Oedipus turned the radio over, looking for the aforementioned switch.
"No, you do not turn the radio over, over."
"May I?" Kaye asked.
The black cat handed the radio to Kaye. She pressed the button on the side. "Kyanosa, give the radio to Mazzic."
"Hi Kaye. You don't happen to have the wing marble yet do you, over?"
"Give me that radio." Sounds of shuffling came through the radio.
"You didn't say over, over." Someone was running, tripping, falling, crashing into the ground. "I'm okay, over. Hey. MINE!"
"I got it now." Mazzic's voice came through the radio.
"Over." Kyanosa added.
Kaye cracked a smile. "Just keep it away from Kyanosa."
"Over."
"Will do.
We'll talk to you if we find anything."
"Over."
"
Okay. Bye."
"Over."
There was the sound of a hand hitting a head. Three guesses again... The radio then fell silent. Kaye reached back to put the radio in her backpack, until she remembered she didn't have one. She made a mental note to bring a backpack with her next time.
"So what exactly are we looking for?" Nubi asked. "Just anything we can use?"
"I suppose so." Kaye replied. "From what the book said about this planet, we could either stumble onto a helpful piece of planet, or wander around on this plain forever."
"That won't help us have our adventure." Oedipus said.
"Who knows. Maybe a piece of another planet will just drop on us." Kaye said, looking up at the sky expectantly. It looked back down at her with a soft orange glow.
Kaye floated into the air, hovering over the ground. She thought about how nice it would be to have a diskman right now, and put that on her list as well, which made her realize she should bring a paper and pencil next time too.
"Hey what's that?" Nubi asked, pointing to the west of the track they were on.
Kaye flew a little higher, peering through what looked like a sheet of rain and clouds that began less than a mile out on the flat plain.
"Looks like a rainstorm." Oedipus said.
"No, it looks like there's a house in there. Just beyond the edge of the rain." Kaye said.
"So?"
"Well it's a house and not a hut. Maybe they have a can opener, a telephone or a big screen TV."
"Which we can take back to that bluebird professor." Nubi said, understanding what the arcanian was implying.
Kaye nodded. "And if not, maybe I can at least get a piece of paper and a pencil."
The two anthros looked confused for a second, but shrugged it off, probably because they were just glad they weren't with Kyanosa. Kaye put her feet back on the ground, and the group headed off towards the rainstorm in the distance.

(Cut boring walking time. Heart of Sword plays in the interlude.)

Kaye stood at the edge of the rainstorm, looking up at the house on the hill. It was a huge Victorian type house, and it looked well tended. There were lights on in various rooms of the house.
"Well I guess we could go knock." Kaye said. "I wonder if the planet this house is from, holds people who won't mind anthros."
"I guess we'll find out." Nubi said.
The group walked into the rain. Kaye held out her hand, having the water roll down an invisible barrier, keeping the three of them perfectly dry as they walked up the driveway, and to the front porch.
Oedipus reached forward and rang the doorbell. There were a few minutes of silence, then some feet, and the sound of the door being unlocked. The door swung open to reveal a tall man in a suit. He blinked three times at the group, probably once for each of the perfectly dry, not entirely human looking persons standing on the porch. "May I help you?"
"We were wondering if you have any electrical appliances to spare." Kaye said hesitantly. It had just occurred to her, that foreign planet or not, who was going to just give up their electrical appliances to three totally strangers without asking questions.
"It's not Halloween for another couple of months." The man said.
"No, we're not here for Halloween." Nubi said.
"Then we don't want any."
"Any what?"
"
Of whatever you're selling."
"We're not selling anything."
"Then why are you here?"
"To see if we can get any spare electrical appliances you may have."
The man blinked a few more times. "Well we're a might busy, but I suppose there could be something in the basement. Come in, and please wipe your feet."
The group stepped through the door, not all at once mind you, and wiped their feet on the mat just inside the door before stepping through to a rather large entrance hall.
The sound of voices were coming from a room to the right. The man shut the door behind them, blocking the sounds of the rain outside.
"Follow me please."
Kaye, Oedipus and Nubi followed him across the entrance hall, when the door the voices was coming from opened.
"We could use a little more wine in here." A woman in a red dress said from the doorway.
"I'll get it for you in just a second Ms..."
Thunder cracked loudly over the house.
"That sounded close." The woman said. She looked at the group following the man. "Halloween isn't for another couple of months."
"We know." Nubi said politely.
"But those are extremely good outfits."
A man with a moustache appeared behind the woman. "Will you get back in here. We don't have time for this. We have to find out who..."
The woman slipped back in the room and shut the door quickly.
"The basement is just down here." The man in the suit opened a door on the far side of the hall and switched on the light revealing steps leading down. "It's all junk, but I imagine some of it was electrical at one point or another. You can help yourselves."
"Thank you." Kaye said, moving down the steps, followed closely by the pair of anthros. Kaye sneezed a few times as they reached the bottom of the stairs. She looked around the poorly lit room, seeing mounds and mounds of, well lots of stuff. "Guess we'll just look around for a bit and see if we can find anything."
The other two nodded, heading around one of the mounds. Kaye took the other way. She immediately found a piece of rope, and tying it the radio, then fastened it around her waist so her hands would be free.
"Wonder if there's a backpack in here somewhere." She muttered. Her eyes slipping over the piles of junk in front of her. "You know, it just occurred to me. How are we supposed to carry back whatever we find?"
"I have a shrinking spell in my book." Oedipus said from somewhere Kaye couldn't see.
"Now that's handy." She replied. "Hey cool!"
"Find something?" Nubi asked.
"Yep, nice scratch pad. Let me know if you find some sort of writing utensil."
The group went back to scrounging through the piles. Some time later, Oedipus found an old microwave that looked like it was in pretty good condition, as well as some batteries, only half of which were not corroded beyond recognition. The anthro cat shrunk the items down and slipped them into his pocket. He had no sooner done this than the only souse of light in the basement went out, plundging the group into darkness.
Kaye screamed.
"Are you okay?" Nubi asked.
"Yeah. I just like doing that when the lights go out." Kaye said, grinning in the darkness. "So who wants to see if they can get back to the steps without tripping over something?"
There were sounds of people running on the floor above them, and then the lights turned back on. Kaye ran up the steps and opened the door.
"Nobody moves." A voice from towards the front door said.
Kaye raised her eye as the man in the suit turned to run from the policemen who came in through the door. The the woman in the red dress , and the man with the moustache were also standing in the entrance hall along with four other people, all looking extremely nervous.
"What's going on?" Nubi questioned from behind the arcanian.
"Police raid." Kay responded.
"We're innocent." One of the men with goofy looking glasses said.
"Innocent of what?" A policeman asked.
"Nothing." Broke in an older looking lady, just don't go in the kitchen.
"What's in the kitchen?"
"Not a dead Boddy."
"Something about this seems familiar." Kaye said. No one else had noticed the three heads looking around the basement door yet. "But I can't think of what it is."
"I think we should leave now." Oedipus said quietly.
Kaye nodded. "I can put up an illusion so they don't see us. Just follow right after me. Water of illusion, cover and hide."
The group moved out of the basement, easily dodging a policemen who was moving towards, what Kaye guessed was, the direction of the kitchen. Nubi and Oedipus followed her out of the still open front door, but just as they were about to step back into the rain, something dawned on Kaye.
"It was Mrs. White in the kitchen with the knife." She shouted through the door. With a smile to the other members of their group, they moved through the rain, back to the sunny grassy plain.
