Chapter XLV: Between a Rocky and a Hard Place. ~Ria
It would be so easy to just kill them. Adrian thought to herself as they walked away from the village. But then if the storms didn't stop, Ragon would just make me go and find out what was really causing it all. She remembered the vision she had, had just the other night. None of the people or creatures in her vision had been threatening.
It has to be something or someone else. But who, and how was she ever going to find them? The scientist was busy with some box that seemed to interest her greatly. Draco seemed to hang close by her side, watching the forest.
Adrian realized that these two probably didn't come from a place with lots of forests. They probably didn't know how to listen to the sounds of the trees or read the shadows for signs of hidden creatures. Adrian had set a pace alongside the river, giving them protection on at least one side.
Every once and a while Alicia would say "Ah ha!" mess with the box some more, and then sigh in annoyance. Adrian watched carefully, glad that even wild magic was more predictable then this box. About midday they reached the foothills of the mountains.
"We either try and get over them or we pick another direction and keep going." Adrian said to her two companions.
Alicia looked up at the steep climb in front of them. "If only I could figure out how to make this work on this world we wouldn't have to walk."
"But I thought we didn't have any idea where we were going." Draco said. "We can't very well teleport somewhere if we don't know where there is."
"Well I suppose this means I pick a new direction." Adrian said. "We don't have time to wait for that box to decide to work."
"Well maybe if I try a random coordinate point we can find out…."
Suddenly Adrian felt something like a gust of wind and she was pulled up into the air. She immediately pulled together the wild magic for a counterspell, only to find no magic to counter. There was a slight humming sound and she found herself back on the ground looking at a bewildered Draco and a frustrated Alicia.
"It shouldn't've worked like that." She was saying, still looking at the box.
Adrian looked around. It didn't take more then a glance to make her realize they were no longer in her forest. They weren't in any forest anymore. They seemed to be perched on top of a pile of rocks in the middle of a bleak, flat plain. Other plies of rocks, like the one they were on, spotted the area around them, making it look almost like a graveyard.
"Dang it, where are we Adrian?" Alicia said.
"I've never been past the mountains." Adrian said. "What did you do to us?"
"Well I teleported us." Alicia said. "It seems like the teleporter is malfunctioning a bit in the world or something."
"So unteleport us." Draco said. "I think I'd rather climb that mountain then be here. It reminds me of a graveyard."
"I can't because I don't really know where we were in the first place."
Adrian, deciding the scientist couldn't give her answers, climbed down from the pile of rocks. She looked around. She could still feel the presence of magic but it felt slightly different then the wild magic she was used to. She created a fireball in her hand. No problems there. She said to herself. Wild magic still works here, but where's here? Adrian had heard Ragon tell stories about the other peoples who were supposed to live on Zolott, but none even mentioned rock fields like this.
Adrian then heard a slight scraping noise. She turned, only to find the noise seemed to be coming from a different direction. After a few unsuccessful tries to locate the source of the noise she stopped and closed her eyes. She reached out to feel any beings that might be around.
She found a few feint traces of creatures, one specifically nearby. She opened her eyes but didn't see anything. From where she felt the magic the closest creature should be right where the rock piles were. Maybe under the rocks. Adrian said walking closer. She leaned in close to the rock pile Draco and Alicia were still standing on and listened closely. The scratching sound was definitely coming from the rocks.
Adrian put her hands on the rocks and pushed. Nothing seemed to move. What could've gotten under there? She wondered. Suddenly the rock in front of her seemed to split open and Adrian found herself face to face with, what looked like, a huge eye. She jumped back responsively.
"Oh, don't tell me this thing just moved." Draco said.
"I'd get off of there." Adrian said moving back more. The rock eye seemed to follow her.
Draco grabbed Alicia and jumped carefully to the ground. There was a loud clanging noise as Draco's feet hit the rocky ground and the rock creature seemed startled. With a loud groan the creature rose to its feet. The creature was about three times as tall as Adrian and seemed to be a rock skeleton, which stood on four feet and had a tail. When the creature was fully up Adrian realized why she'd felt the presence of another creature. Inside the rock's ribcage (well about that point) a light blue creature seemed to be caught. It lunged at the unyielding rock that kept it caged and fell back with a growl.
"What is that?" Draco said.
"I don't know." Adrian said.
The rock creature seemed a bit more agile now that it was on its feet. It also seemed to have decided that Adrian looked like something nice to squash. The rock creature moved towards Adrian with a bellow, surprisingly loud for being made up of rock.
Adrian pulled out her sword and shot a blast of fire at the beast. The creature went through the fire as if it were nothing.
"Fire's not going to hurt it." A voice yelled.
Adrian realized it came from the blue creature. "Suggestions?" She called back.
"Tail's the weakness. Oh and don't let it wake up any of it's buddies."
Adrian then realized that the other rock piles must be other creatures like this as well. She glanced over at Draco.
"I say we just stop this walking rock pile and worry about others things later." He said.
Both he and Adrian ran around the creature, on opposite sides. Draco's hand suddenly disappeared and a blast of energy shot out of the hole towards the beast. It hit right on the rock creature's tail and it bellowed in anger. Adrian pulled a huge wind cutter into existence around her hand and shot it towards the tail. With a large crunch the tail seemed to fall away.
The blue creature inside jumped out quickly as the rock turned towards it's attackers, who were now behind it. The blue creature raced towards Adrian, stopping along side her. He was slightly taller then she was.
"We need to move." He said. "Get on."
Adrian didn't waste any time jumping onto the creature's back.
"We have to get Alicia too." She said as he jumped forward. The creature swerved towards the human and Adrian grabbed her as they passed. Draco was also picked up on their mad dash.
"He'll lose interest soon." Their ride said between strides. "They don't stay interested for long."
He was right as the rock creature soon fell back and finally stopped. The blue creature sighed and stopped himself. Adrian, Draco and Alicia slid off his back.
"Thanks for the ride." Adrian said.
"No thank you for getting me out of there. I can't believe I was stupid enough to get caught by a rocky. Just a stupid dare. Wait till I get a hold of Blizz." The creature paused. "Oh by the way, my name's Gelid."
"I'm Adrian." Adrian said taking the chance to study the creature closer. It was about a head or so taller then she was with long deer like legs that ended in paws. His head was shaped like a deer's with a sort of crest coming from his forehead. He was covered in very fine fur that was a light blue with dark blue diamonds all over his sides. He also had to silver ribbon like strands coming out of his rear and twisting all around his body.
"I'm Draco." The robot introduced himself.
"And I'm Alicia." The scientist said, walking around Gelid. "What exactly are you?"
"I happen to be an Ice Dog." Gelid replied.
"Amazing." Alicia murmured. "If I only had my camera."
"That's all well and good, but I for one don't want to stay in this field of rock creatures." Draco said. "I vote we haul butt."
"Hey why don't you come back to my pack's cave?" Gelid said. "We don't get many visitors."
"Sounds good." Alicia said. "is it far?"
"Nope, just over the ridge." Gelid replied. "Everyone'll be thrilled I'm back. I've been trapped in that things belly for a few days."
"Why didn't you try to get out yourself?" Adrian asked. "You seemed to know what to do."
"I don't have an angle for the tail from where I was. A rocky's only weakness is it's tail and its eyes. Since it would've curled into a ball again if you'd hit the eyes I decided to tell you to hit the tail." Gelid had already started leading them forward.
"Sounds good to me." Draco said.
They came to the top of a hill over looking a grassy plain.
"Wait. This isn't right. Where is it?" Gelid bounded forward and looked around as if lost.
"What's wrong?"
"My home. It was here when I left. It was a huge ice field and there was a cave. How could this happen. Where did it go? Where's my family?"
Adrian looked around the waving grass. "It must have gone back to it's planet." She said.
"Gone back? What do you mean?" Gelid asked.
"Have you ever heard of Zolott?" Adrian asked.
The Ice Dog shook his head. "I live on a planet called Frost."
Adrian explained what she could to Gelid and his face went from worried to murderous. "Who did this? I want to know what happened and where my family is."
"We don't know ourselves, but something weird is going on, on Zolott and we're going to find out what it is." Adrian said.
"Then I'm going with you." Gelid announced.
