Chapter XCIII: "You Think You Had It Rough?" -Vector
Vector sat on the bed that was in the room Theutes had put him in after his little stunt. He looked down at the heavy chain that now linked his legs, and reflected back on his life. Compared to other things he had been through, this was cloud nine. All through the day after he ran outside the city walls, his had walked with a limp. Also, after Theutes got through kicking him, his ribs hurt. He stood up, when all of the sudden, Theutes opened the door.
"Lex! Blarkum!" he snapped. Vector was truly tired of speaking Togorian to Theutes. Vector knew very little Pandoran, and Theutes knew no English, and yelled every time Vector spoke in his most used language.
"Yeah yeah. I’m coming." Vector said in English. Vector walked at a normal walking speed, but the chain between his legs tired him out considerably. Vector assumed that this was the general idea. Theutes led him to the kitchen, and put him to work scrubbing the floor, while Lich was polishing a table beside him. "Lich?" Vector said.
"Yes?" Lich said, looking down at Vector.
"’Ya’know, I think I’m just gonna give up on getting out of here." Vector said with a sigh.
"What do you mean you’ve given up on getting out?" Lich inquired.
"Look." Vector said. "I dunno about you, but I find this life a lot better than getting blasted of sucked out of an airlock." Lich looked down at Vector, who had a definite look of depression on his face.
"But look at it this way." Lich said, attempting to cheer Vector up. "You get out of here, we go back to Yamauchi, and there’s no blasters or airlocks there. You stay here, and you’re doomed to a life of scrubbing tables." Vector looked up at Lich, and risked a beating by getting up, and sitting in a chair beside the table.
"You think this is bad? You haven’t seen bad. In my eighteen years, I’ve seen stuff that you would never believe."
"Like what?" Lich said. "Like having your brother sucked away from you in a flash flood, being subjected to ‘refinement’ so I can become the Guardian of the Cyan Arc? You don’t want me to tell you about ‘refinement’." Vector looked at him.
"That all seems pretty bad, but that’s a cake walk compared to my life." Vector said. "My entire childhood is worse than that, for one simple reason. You weren’t born into slavery." At this time, Theutes walked in, and noticed Vector sitting idly. He hit Vector in the back of the head, knocking him into the floor.
"Lex! Work or be punished!" he yelled. Vector set about scrubbing the floor once again, and Lich finished the table.
As the day wore on, Lich found that Vector was quite the rebel. He had not received any beatings that day. Vector, however, had suffered through 12 of them. At times, when near him, Lich wondered if Vector was an android. He could push himself farther than any yoshi he had seen, and seemed to have an incredible tolerance for pain. As they lay in the little room, Lich noticed a tear fall from Vector’s eye.
"Vector?" Lich asked. "What’s wrong?
"I just miss someone. That’s all." Vector said
"Who do you miss?" Lich asked. He looked at Vector, and noticed more tears streaming down his face.
"There was this girl, named Lorel. I miss her. Even though we were on opposing sided in a war, we vowed to get married some day." Vector said, his voice quivering.
"I don’t know what to tell you." Lich said. "Maybe you-…" He looked over at Vector. He was fast asleep, as was Tob. Lich decided to sleep as well, and as he closed his eyes, he hoped that Vector would be in a better mood the next day.
