Chapter 148 : Lizards in the Desert ~Ria

Adrian was enjoying the silence. At least she thought she was. The peacefulness of not having Kyanosa making random comments, and not having Optional turn into random objects at the drop of a hat (which he had become a few times), was relaxing at first. She was on her way to find out what was wrong with Zolott, and she could do it without interruption.
She could see mountains in the distance. Gelid was trotting along beside her. Somewhere far off a bird of some sort called into the silence.
"It's quiet isn't it?" Adrian said.
Gelid looked at her in surprise. "Yeah. I guess it is."
"Wanna run?" She asked quickly before the ice dog could comment further.
"Sure." Came his reply to the question, but Adrian was already halfway to her griffin form. With a screech she launched forward, streaking over the ground. Gelid shot after her. The barren landscape moved past on either side of the pair in no more then a blur. The wind whistled past them, as they covered more ground in a few minutes, then they had covered in the past few days. Suddenly Adrian slid to a halt.
"What?" Gelid called back, since his stride had taken him a few hundred feet past her abrupt halt.
"Whatever was destroying Zolott has stopped." She said as he trotted back over to her.
"Really? Well that's good." Gelid said.
"Yeah it is." Adrian replied.
Gelid could tell she was relieved, but a little puzzled as well.
"But it was a pretty strong magic that was attacking Zolott, and then it just stopped." Adrian said. "Who, or whatever stopped it had to be more powerful."
"Could it have been that Havering guy?"
"It wasn't evil feeling." She shook her head. "It was nature magik."
"So what's that mean? Do we have more enemies then we thought?"
"That could be it." Adrian said. "I guess the only thing to do is keep going and find out who was there."
Gelid nodded in agreement. They started forward again. The ice dog had a feeling Adrian would've rather flown and gotten there faster. The plains around them shifted slowly from patches of grass to patches of sand and grass, and then finally to pure sand. A hot wind blew around them as they bounded over the shifting ground beneath their feet.
"Woah. What's that?" Gelid said. The shimmering heat across the horizon of sand in front of them kept him from seeing to clearly.
"Probably a mirage." Adrian replied, not slowing her run.
"What's a mirage?"
"It's when you're so hot that you see something that's not there." She replied.
"Well are you seeing it too?"
"Well there's something there."
"How can we both see something that's not there then?" Gelid asked.
They both stopped running. Gelid looked closer. It seemed to be some sort of machine made of metal, but he didn't know to much about such things. Adrian was already changing back into her auran form.
"Well this is about the area where the magik was coming from, so let's see who's there."
"They could be enemies." Gelid said. "My ice isn't going to be much help out here. I can only get them a bit wet."
A smile traced on Adrian's lips. "Don't worry. I can more then take care of anything that comes along."
They walked closer to the machine. Suddenly, what seemed to be an orange lizard, walked towards them.
(Enter select Yoshian phrase here)
"Who are you?" Adrian replied, her voice calm. Gelid saw her hand rest lightly on the hilt of her sword, but she didn't draw it.
"Dyluck Thanatos Yoshi von Kippo." Came the quick response. "And who are you?"
Gelid realized quickly that Adrian being polite was pretty smart. There seemed to be quite a few other beings around, to many for them to handle.
"I am Adrian, and this is Gelid." Adrian replied. "We're here because I sensed someone trying to blow up Zolott. Do you happen to know who or what it was."
The orange lizard looked at her oddly. "You know this planet is called Zolott?"
"Of course." She replied. "It's been my home for as long as I've been alive."
"So you're actually a native of this planet?"
"You could say that. Now are you purposely trying to avoid my question?"
Dyluck (etc.) looked at her oddly, probably trying to figure out if he could trust this stranger. He finally nodded. "It was the protector of the Yoshies, The Markior. He didn't mean any harm by it. He lost himself for a little while."
"So is he in league with Havering or not?" Adrian asked.
"You know about Pseudo Havering too?" Dyluck (etc.) looked more surprised.
"At least now I know he's a real person." Adrian replied. "I wasn't sure how reliable yellow books belonging to people who like to carry around umbrella were."
The lizard still looked puzzled. "So I take that as you don't work for him either."
Adrian shook her head.
"How about Ulrezaj?"
"I am just trying to save this planet from whoever's trying to do otherwise." Adrian said.
"Follow me." Lich said.
Gelid moved up next to Adrian as they followed Dyluck (etc.) into the machine. He wasn't so sure about the whole thing, but Adrian didn't seem to worried about it. As they moved inside, it was clear that the machine had taken some severe damage. Gelid tried to ignore the curious stares they were receiving, by pretending to be fascinated by the actually very uninteresting walls.
They entered a door at the end of the uninteresting wall. Inside Gelid was surprised to see something that looked half like Dyluck (etc.), which his bottom half, just vapor.
"Who are these guests Lich?" The vapor-lizard asked.
"This is Adrian and Gelid. Apparently they know about this planet, as well as Pseudo." The orange lizard replied.
"I am The Markior." The vapor-lizard said politely.
"So you were the one who almost destroyed Zolott?" Adrian demanded.
The Markior nodded sadly. "I'm sorry to say that I did."
"And what stopped you?"
"I got some sense knocked into me by Lich." He replied.
"So you both control a good amount of magik." Adrian commented. "What are you doing on this planet?"
"We're here to stop Pseudo Havering." The Markior replied.
"Then I suppose we're allies." Adrian said.
Gelid almost smiled in spite of himself. Adrian was so quick to accept these strangers, when she wouldn't even give a human the time of day. Whatever had caused her to dislike humans must have been pretty bad.
