Chapter CLXI: Next Move ~Artemis

Night had fallen, and the three companions were all tired. They trekked all day long with only one short break for the midday meal. Caliban was still close enough to be sensed, Fang had said, but that he was not a threat as of yet. Artemis gathered enough wood for a small fire, enough for warmth and the cooking of a nice dinner. Fang had gone off hunting, but kept in constant contact with Artemis.
"Flying capes do eat, right?" She asked Friaz as she bent to start the fire. The thought of the cloak eating a stew, or much less a rabbit, made Artemis chuckle lightly. Friaz arched an eyebrow at her, and couldn’t help but laugh with her.
"Yes, I eat. I drink too, and right now I’m parched." He replied. Artemis made a gesture behind her.
"There’s a stream not too far back that way. Go get a drink there. Oh, and while you’re at it…" She paused, pulling out a water skin from her belt. She tossed it to him saying, "Fill that up for me, will you? That will be tomorrow’s drinking water." Friaz caught the water skin, nodding as he floated off in the direction that Artemis pointed out. Fang came back shortly after he left, dropping a rabbit at her side.
"Was all I could find." He explained.
"Good enough, I’m not that hungry anyway, and I’m running out of spices." She replied. With skillful ease, Artemis skinned the rabbit and fastened it to a stick, seasoning it a little before roasting it over the fire.
"So, where’s cape boy?" Fang asked, sitting away from the fire to keep his fur safe.
"He went to get some water. He’d better be back soon, or else he’ll be getting his own dinner." Artemis replied. Fang chuckled at that comment, and Artemis laughed with him.
"What’s so funny?" A puzzled Friaz asked as he floated over to Artemis, handing her the water skin. Artemis shook her head and motioned for him to sit down as she pulled off the rabbit. She cut it into equal parts, handing him a piece. They both ate hungrily, and Artemis noted that she was hungrier than she thought.

Total night had fallen quite some time ago, but the three companions lay on the ground, not yet asleep. They were all very tired, but none of them could put their minds at ease; always listening for an approaching Caliban.
"What are we to do now, Artemis? You know very well we can’t just keep running from him." Friaz finally asked. This very thought was what troubled her more than anything else.
"I still think that creature is the key to all of this. That…oh what was his name again? Mulberry…hex something…" Artemis thought aloud.
"Does Multex ring a bell?" Fang chuckled. She glared over at her wolf companion before saying the name out loud.
"Yes, that Multex creature. Anyway, I know he has something to do with all of this. And…strange as it sounds…I feel safe around him. Something about him…I can relate to. It’s strange, really." She replied. Friaz nodded in agreement.
"Where would we find him though?" He asked. Artemis shrugged and sighed. "I’m not sure what I have left of my powers, but I could try and help. Maybe even if we were able to get a general direction. Or…would your Jem be able to help us at all?"
"For once, this guy is starting to strike me as intelligent." Fang commented. Artemis laughed, and nodded to Friaz.
"I’m not sure about my Jem, but we’ll only use that as a last resort. Caliban is after Fang and I, remember. He’s sure to have a way to know when and where I use Evangelina’s powers." She replied. "In the morning, before we leave, let’s see what you can do. If we don’t get anything, I’ll call on Evangelina. I’m sure she’ll be able to help."
"Sounds like a plan. Does the fur ball agree?" Fraiz said.
"I take back what I said about him being intelligent…" Fang replied. Artemis smiled and nodded to Friaz.

For the first time since Artemis was taken from her home, she slept peacefully.
