Chapter CCXLIX: Why Fire is Your Favourite ~Kyanosa

Kyanosa, Sheko, and Redaz were walking through the hallways of the fallen black ship, trying to figure out where they were going. Sheko was looking around intently, while Redaz had lit his hand on fire again and was lighting the area. Kyanosa was playing with his yo-yo and thinking about pockets. Still.

Sheko squinted, trying to see anything up ahead. "You know, I figured this would be a lot harder."

"Tell me about it." Redaz started examining the wall.

Kyanosa turned to him. "You see, generally when the big evil guy has a large floating ship, the inner defenses-"

Redaz gave him a look. You know, like a look. "Shut up."

Sheko interrupted their bickering. "I mean, we should at least get some pushover guards or a security robot."

"Or at least a janitor." Redaz mumbled.

"They're already scared of us. After all, we did rock that thingywhatsit that was eating the dead guys, and I gave Robot #1 some pretty mean looks as he was coming after me."

Sheko rolled his eyes. "Be serious for once."

"No."

Redaz smiled. "Yeah, nobody's scared of us."

"You be quiet too." Sheko growled.

Kyanosa chuckled. "Like us being quiet is going to make everything better. Or anything. Look, if something is going to try and kill us, it's at least not going to be clomping down the hallway. That's too obvious. It'll come from somewhere unexpected, wherever we're not looking." Instantly two pink lasers shot over his head, slightly singing (as in singe, not sing) the top of his hair. "Case in point."

All three of them whirled around to find the source of the attack. A small metal rod was sticking out of the wall, attached to the center of the largest side of a rectangular metal box. The smallest side of the box had two long, thin rods in it, and these ran from the box parallel to one another. When the group had regained its composure, another pair of lasers shot out of the end of the pair of rods and towards Kyanosa's head. Sheko jumped in front of him and brought up his arm, blocking the lasers with one of his bracelets. Redaz caught on and gathered fire energy in one hand, taking careful aim and blasting the laser gun before it could get off another shot. Kyanosa, though, didn't move a muscle.

Sheko turned to face him. "You didn't try to dodge it."

"Nope."

"Why not?"

"I have absolute faith in our abilities. I knew my movements would only confuse the situation more, so I remained where I am and gave you as much freedom of movement as possible."

"But reflexes make you dodge, right?"

"Not at all."

Sheko smiled. "Absolutely fearless, eh?"

"Exactly."

"Nice. Okay, let's keep moving."

"I'll come with you as soon as my legs start working again." A hatch opened in the wall, allowing another laser box to come through. "Yep, that'll do it." Kyanosa turned around and started running.

He was momentarily joined by Sheko and Redaz, who had each decided that letting somebody like this out of their sight could possibly prove very, very bad. Sheko was worried that Kyanosa would attack him, thinking that Havering had possessed his body and that the only way to free Sheko would be to kill him. Redaz was worried Kyanosa would run into a wall, fall down, and get shot. Both very legitimate concerns.

As they were running through, a number of boxes came out of the wall and started firing. Redaz was dispatching them just as quickly as they emerged, his ace aim with the fireballs not failing him for a second. Having remembered his name, Kyanosa started tearing some out of the wall with his yo-yo, and all Sheko needed to dispatch one was a nice jump-kick.

Just when they thought everything was going rather well, the ground in front of them suddenly opened up, revealing a long black hole, the depths of which could be seen by nobody in the group. Kyanosa naturally fell in, but quickly snapped his yo-yo at the ceiling above the ground at the other end of the pit. Sheko and Redaz jumped after him and latched onto his ankles, and Kyanosa retracted the string and pulled them all safely to the other side. Once there, he pulled out his umbrella and opened it, forming a shield from the lasers still firing from the end at which they just were. More lasers came out of the walls in the new segment of hallway, and Sheko blocked those while Redaz fired (pun only slightly intended) at them.

After a good thirty seconds in this setup, Kyanosa looked behind him. "Shouldn't they all be dead by now."

"You can't kill robots. They aren't alive." Redaz called behind him

"Tell that to the one that green dude cleaved."

Redaz was silent for a moment, then shrugged. "They keep regenerating."

"There's more of them than before, even." Sheko was blocking more frantically now, occasionally having to reach out and use his other bracelet. "We need to break through this."

"What about your werewolf form?" Redaz asked, hoping that's what he had seen earlier. Who knows, he could have been possessed at the time. Wait, that would mean Kyanosa was right earlier, so never mind. Definitely werewolf. Forget I wrote that.

"Oh, I'm saving that for Havering." Sheko gritted his teeth.

Kyanosa snapped his fingers. "Got it. Spiky boy, watch our back for a second."

"What are you going to do?"

"Well, I figure these powers are like the ones used in the game. In the Super Nintendo version, the Fire power meant that Kirby could spit fireballs, but in the others, the Burning power turned him into a fireball and shot him forward. If C.R. understood that the game existed on two platforms, he probably included the comet ability and my marble, which means I can move."

Sheko blinked. "What?"

"Exactly. Hang on." Kyanosa switched out his umbrella, forcing Sheko to lunge back and catch a few stray lasers. The former then triggered his fire power, with the whole hair color, armor color, shoulder pads thing. He turned to look down the hallway and broke into a run. Just before he reached the first laser, he jumped into the air, putting his shoulder forward as if to slam into something. His entirely body glowed red, and suddenly fire, starting at some point about a foot in front of his shoulder, engulfed him. The sheer energy given off by this maneuver kept him in the air and sent him, with a cone of fire acting as defense from the laser blasts, flying though the hall. Every time he passed a laser box, a string of fire would lance out and whip into it, slicing right through the mechanism and dropping it to the ground. He became a seemingly unstoppable force, his fire covering the whole of the hallway wherever he passed, scorching the very walls and leaving the entire area within his reach a blackened disaster.

Sheko and Redaz understandably followed a good distance behind him.

When the hallway opened into a large domed room with a mirrored floor, Kyanosa's fire fizzled out and he dropped audibly to the ground, letting it gradually arrest his motion as he rolled along. Sheko caught up to his sliding body and turned it face-up. "Are you okay?"

Kyanosa coughed a few clouds of smoke. "Geez, no. Do you have any idea how much that takes out of you?"

Sheko raised an eyebrow. "Yes."

Just as Redaz caught up with them, a metal door suddenly clinked shut behind him. In fact, various metal doors clinked shut all around the room, closing off every exit. A few pipes opened in the room, and instantly water started gushing out of them. Despite the size of the room, it was filling up rather quickly, and in less than a minute our group was starting to tread water.

Sheko looked around, trying to find a way out. "Can anybody blast through one of these doors?"

Redaz shook his head. "Not with the water. Fire doesn't work well in it."

He turned around. "And you?"

Kyanosa had switched his fire off, as he didn't know what effects water had on it. "Nothing. My fire's shot, and nothing else I have is that powerful."

Sheko watched Kyanosa for a second, noticing that he was having more trouble than the others staying afloat. "Are you okay?"

"Just a bit beat. I'll make it." As he said this, he went underwater up to his nose. Sheko pulled him back up, sputtering.

Redaz followed Sheko's lead and tried to find an exit as well. "Maybe we can break through a wall."

Sheko shook his head. "No good. You saw how powerful those things are. He used his big fire thing and all they did was change color."

"How about the roof?"

Sheko looked up at the rapidly approaching ceiling. "It looks like the same material. And at this rate, we'll probably hit it in another few minutes."

"Nah, I'll drown before then." Kyanosa summoned his yo-yo and threw it at the ceiling, sticking it there. He then retracted it slightly, pulling him out of the water but leaving him close enough to stay in the conversation.

Sheko hummed something. Probably Taps. "Okay, there has to be a way out. There always is."

Redaz looked down, through the water. "What about the floor?"

He followed Redaz's gaze. "It's possible. But we need something powerful to break through that, and your strongest attacks are all fire-based. I have major wind and light powers, but I can't see them working. Light reflects off of mirrors, and wind won't do well underwater. "

Kyanosa took a deep breath. "Hang on."

Redaz looked up. "No, you hang on. You might drown otherwise."

"Shut up. No, really, I could use my new power. I think I turn into a rock and I might be able to break through the glass, but not if the water's slowing me down."

Sheko thought for a moment and snapped his fingers. "I could use wind magic to part the water and give you a clear channel."

Redaz nodded. "Worth a shot."

"Alright." Kyanosa fully retraced his string putting him as far up as possible. Sheko gathered his energy and summoned the winds, forming a small, tubular tornado just under the hanged man that pushed the water aside for an area maybe two feet in diameter. Kyanosa unsummoned (it's a word now, dang it) the yo-yo in the requisite flash of light, shone bright white for a second, and turning into a perfectly spherical boulder. He plummeted to the ground and through Sheko's opening, eventually crashing into and through the mirrored floor. Sheko dropped his tornado and water gushed through the hole, lowering the water level in the room. Apparently, it was draining more quickly than the pipes could supply it.

Within a few minutes, a very tired Sheko and Redaz were standing in a very damp room. Once the water level had sunk so far, the pipes simply shut off. Sheko guessed they were on a timer, and the point at which they had stopped flowing was when the room was supposed to be full. They both carefully jumped down Kyanosa's hole, landing in another very damp hallway. Lying nearby was a very damp Kyanosa as well.

Redaz stood next to him, looking down. "Where's all the water? And how come you aren't with it?"

Kyanosa smiled weakly. "It all ran somewhere else. I stayed in rock form until it all left. But I am completely out of energy now." He clenched his fist, which glowed white for a second and faded out.

Sheko nodded to where the glow was. "What was that?"

This time, Kyanosa managed a grin. "New power."

"Alright." Redaz looked down both ends of the hallway. "Let's keep moving."

"Sorry, can't."

"Why not?"

"Don't have the energy to stand up."

"Man, your legs never work." Sheko bent down and picked Kyanosa up. "Lead the way, fire boy."

Redaz nodded, lit a fireball in his hand to light the way, and walked down the hallway. The other two a few feet behind, the only sound accompanying them being a steady dripping from the room above.
